Honoring

Standard

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Fourth and fifth grade students created a collective series of work to honor veterans for Veterans Day this year.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students created the Ohio flag.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

They also made a flag of the United States.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students also created a poster for the army, navy , air force, marines and the coast guard.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

After drawing the design and tracing it with marker, students added a wash of watercolor paint for the background.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

After retracing the poster with marker, students began to use dots of paint in a pointillistic manner.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Every group began adding dots of color to their art work.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Collectively the work began to take shape as dots and colors began to fill in the design.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

It was fun to watch the students take ownership of their work as their skills increased.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

All of the students were introduced to new art techniques and design ideas as they worked cooperatively on this project.

Character words

Standard

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Fourth grade students completed their paintings of character words.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

After adding finishing touches to their letter paintings, each group discussed their work.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The final step was to add a coat of gloss to their canvas.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students really enjoyed working cooperatively on this project.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Each class viewed their work at the end of the project.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone participated in a review of their work and the  creative process.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students were proud of the fact their work will be on view in the building for all to see.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone engaged in the learning process for this project.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Maybe you can stop by and see the students’ work once it is hung in the building over the summer break.

Lettering

Standard

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Fourth grade students have been working on a lettering project.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Each forth grade class has been working on a character word that will be displayed in the school.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Each class has six groups, and each group is responsible for one of the letters in the word.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone has been busy working on the background and the subject, which is the letter.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students have been using and learning about complementary colors as they explore masking out the letter they paint.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The project is teaching the students to work cooperatively.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Here are a couple of examples of the students’ work before we begin to add texture to the background of their work.

Painting snowflakes

Standard

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Fourth grade and sixth grade students worked on snowflake paintings based on micro-photographs of actual snowflakes.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students outlined the snowflake drawings with sharpie markers for a permanent line.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Next the students added a watercolor wash to the background for a deeper color.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Students then added several layers of white acrylic paint over their snowflake drawings.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

This required the students to focus and build their brush skills as they fill in the flakes with white acrylic.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The final step was to add a coat of gloss to seal their image for display.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Here are some examples of their paintings now on display at Willard Elementary School.

Letter design

Standard

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Fourth grade students have recently completed a letter design project.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Fourth grade students are exploring texture and design with letter shapes.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

As they began this project they used various types of texture to fill a space in the letter H.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Next the students picked a color from the color wheel to fill in their letter adding analogous color to fill in the shape.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The next step in the project was to pick a complementary color for the background based on the color used for the letter H.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The final step was to add texture to the background of the project and insert analogous colors in the texture.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

This project stretched and challenged the fourth graders as it prepared them for our upcoming painting project with letters.

Collective sculpture

Standard

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Fourth grade students from Richmond School completed their final project: a collective sculpture based on the art of Jean Dubuffet.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

First everyone completed painting their section of the sculpture white.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Next students began to add color and lines based on the ideas of Jean Dubuffet, who used the limited pallet of red, blue, black and white.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Fourth graders learned to work as a group as they built and painted their sculpture.

Jean Dubuffet (31 July 1901 – 12 May 1985) was a French painter and sculptor.  He is perhaps best known for founding the art movement Art Brut, and for the collection of works—Collection de l’art brut—that this movement spawned. Dubuffet enjoyed a prolific art career, both in France and in America, and was featured in many exhibitions throughout his lifetime.  From 1962 he produced a series of works in which he limited himself to the colors red, white, black, and blue. Towards the end of the 1960s he turned increasingly to sculpture, producing works in polystyrene which he then painted with vinyl paint.

Here are three views of the students’ sculpture on display at the Art Junction in New Haven, Ohio.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

The fourth graders planned their part of the sculpture and began the process of creating their sculptural element.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Each group (and there are twelve groups in all) is making a different part of the sculptural figure.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Everyone worked with recycled materials and glue as the forth grades worked together to create the sculpture.

It’s exciting to see the students work together and prepare to paint in our next studio session.
