Honoring

Fourth and fifth grade students created a collective series of work to honor veterans for Veterans Day this year.

Students created the Ohio flag.

They also made a flag of the United States.

Students also created a poster for the army, navy , air force, marines and the coast guard.

After drawing the design and tracing it with marker, students added a wash of watercolor paint for the background.

After retracing the poster with marker, students began to use dots of paint in a pointillistic manner.

Every group began adding dots of color to their art work.

Collectively the work began to take shape as dots and colors began to fill in the design.

It was fun to watch the students take ownership of their work as their skills increased.

All of the students were introduced to new art techniques and design ideas as they worked cooperatively on this project.

Winter landscapes

Second grade students recently completed their study of winter landscapes.

The first step of the project was mixing watercolor paint for the winter sky.

Students had three colors to choose from as they blended them together to create their sunset sky.

The next step was to add trees using ink.

This process required the students to control the brush in a new way as they allowed the lines to be formed from their loose brush strokes.

Everyone was part of the process as they learned from each other’s creative process.

The next step was to add shadow to the landscape with blue watercolor.

This required everyone to look at the whole image beyond the process of adding shadow to the trees.

The final step in the project was to add snow to sky.

Students employed cotton swabs and white tempera paint to add this finishing touch to their landscapes.

Many Faces

First grade students completed a unit on drawing the human figure this spring.

Everyone created many drawings with pencil.

Next ink was added to their portraits.

The final step was to add a wash of color to their drawings.

Students used either warm colors for their watercolor wash or cool colors.

Everyone enjoyed being part of the creative process.

Although this was a challenging project for students, they really pushed themselves and grew through the process.

Color

 

Kindergarten students recently completed their line drawings by adding washes of color.

 

Students first spent a session creating many line drawings in ink using various types of repeated lines.

 

 

Using the color wheel, everyone followed a pattern with the employment of their watercolor paint.

 

Students were fully engaged in the creative process.

 

This was a great project to introduce the students to many new art concepts and mediums.

Lines

Kindergarten students recently explored painting lines with ink.

Students explored creating various types of lines with a brush.

This required everyone to focus on brush control as they learned to repeat several types of lines in a pattern.

Kindergarten students enjoyed the first part of this project as they developed brush control skills with these various types of lines in ink.

Autumn landscapes

Second grade students have been busy this fall learning about and creating autumn landscapes.

The first step of the project was to create a background with watercolor paint.

Students learned to blend together related colors to create a wonderful warm background sky.

Next second graders used ink to create their trees.

Each student created two paintings.  Everyone added a horizon line and a grouping of trees to their paintings.

This was a great lesson to learn to use line and control the brush.

Students did a great job learning to use new materials to create a wonderful landscape.

The final step was using the sponge.

Second graders had several colors to use to sponge paint their trees and foreground.

Everyone enjoyed the hands-on process of painting with a sponge.

Everyone learned that it took very little paint and pressure to create a wonderful sponge application of leaves and grass to their autumn landscapes.
